How to choose a homestay: eight questions to ask before you book

  1. How far is the nearest road?
  2. Is hot water available all day?
  3. What are the meal timings?
  4. Is there a power backup?
  5. What is the cancellation rule?
  6. Who is the host, and can you speak to a past guest?
  7. Is the price per room or per person?
  8. Is there a local-ID rule?

A good host will answer these questions in one message. Ask also about quiet hours, local walks and whether children or older guests are comfortable.

Read recent reviews rather than the star score, and check that the photos match the room you are booking.

This is a demo story: every name, place, organisation and figure in it is fictional.
